Coffea Martini 43 - Coffee Cocktail

Espresso Martini recipe, coffee cocktail

Coffea Martini 43

An Espresso Martini is one of the nations favourite cocktails, which is hardly surprising if you’re looking for an alcoholic ‘pick me up.’ Not only does it look amazing but there’s no better way to welcome guests with a drink that always stimulates conversation. After all, who wouldn’t question the ’43’ element?!

What is a Coffea Martini 43?

It’s a fusion of a Spanish after dinner drink called Carajillo and an Espresso Martini. To add to the mystique we’ve rebranded the Espresso Martini in salute to our Coffea Coffee Liqueur! Put simply it’s a cold punchy caffeinated alcoholic coffee cocktail, with a vanilla edge. Although it’s not a true Martini as there’s neither Gin or Vermouth included. It is however made with coffee espresso, coffee liqueur, Licor 43 and Vodka, which makes this cocktail a sumptuous and indulgent tipple. Personally the most satisfying part of an Espresso Martini is the foam top. Almost akin to the crema found on an Espresso but not so intense or bitter, more creamy sweat and indulgent. We absolutely love it!

We totally recommend thinking about the freshly brewed Espresso element to this cocktail days before trying. We’ve tried many and from experience the best Espresso Martinis are made using Espresso from an Espresso machine that brews a small amount of finely ground coffee under immense pressure for a short period of time. This is partly due to the strength of Espresso as there is potentially four times more caffeine in 30ml than regular coffee. Not to mention the prized crema these Espresso machines produce. Unfortunately though not everyone has access to such Espresso coffee machines. So it might be worth popping over to your favourite coffee shop and buying a few shots before hand. Alternatively there is cold brew coffee concentrate widely available.

Recipe

  • 25ml Coffea Coffee Liqueur
  • 25ml freshly brewed Espresso
  • 50ml Vodka
  • 20ml Licor 43
  • Ice cubes
  • Coffee beans and halved vanilla pod to garnish (optional)

Tools

Cocktail Shaker - There are a number of different cocktail shakers you can use. I personally use a Cobbler Shaker which is a household favourite. Some say for novices but frankly when you have an all in one solution which is made of stainless steel, it’s my go to cocktail shaker. It has a built in strainer and a cap which can be used as a jigger (the cap is a standard 1oz/30ml size). The two other cocktail shakers to consider are Boston and French/Parisian, each with their individual pros and cons.

Jigger - Bartending tool/dual ended cup for measuring spirits that is normally dual ended (50ml/25ml).

Serving glass - Classic Martini glass. These differ from traditional cocktail glasses having a large bowl and being completely conical at the bottom. A long stem also helps keep the drink cool as strained cocktails served in this glass tend not to have ice.

Method

Combine all the ingredients in the cocktail shaker and vigorously shake until well chilled. Strain into a Martini glass and garnish with 3 coffee beans and vanilla pod.

Origin of Coffea Martini 43 - 1980’s

There are several claims to the origin of Espresso Martini and one of the more common claims is that it was created by Dick Bradsell back in the 1980s. Whilst he was working at a London bar a young lady asked for something that would "wake me up, and then mess me up.”

The 43 element is inspiration from a recent family Spanish holiday by our founder Jason Stephenson in need of a ‘warming pick me up.’ Enjoyed by friends, family and coffee lovers…
