I sometimes wonder where the inspiration of naming cocktails comes from. There are some weird cocktail names out there like A Lonely Island Lost in the Middle of a Lonely Sea, conjuring up visions of being castaway with a well stocked bar. And then there’s a Muddy Coffea, which in our defence is Liqueurious rebranding a classic Mudslide. This doesn’t come close to conjuring up anything as romantic as the aforementioned cocktail. Our inspiration is simple and the velvety mouthfeel and desert like cocktail is an absolute favourite of ours. Best of all, your guests can skip desert if this cocktail is on the menu.

What is a Muddy Coffea - Coffee Cocktail

In a word, indulgent. It’s a creamy, velvety, grownup milkshake served in a glass. It even has chocolate shavings on top and frankly looks like a desert too. It’s so smooth and creamy it’ll even give you a moustache, which in someways is endearing when entertaining your guests.

It’s worth noting if you pour the cream into the Vodka first it will split/curdle. This is because alcohol is acidic, which lowers the Ph level of the dairy and in turn causes the milk to separate. So, don’t be alarmed if this happens, it’s a perfectly normal phenomena.


  • 50ml Coffea Coffee Liqueur
  • 50ml Vodka
  • 50ml Baileys Irish Cream
  • 75ml Double cream
  • Handful of Ice
  • Chocolate shavings to garnish


  • Serving glass - Glass selection isn’t too important (I use the term cocktail glass generically), as the vessel shape wont effect the flavours or aromas. We use our vintage Babycham glasses to serve ours as they’re a perfect size and add a bit of nostalgia (they’re probably from the same era too).
  • Cocktail Shaker - There are a number of different cocktail shakers you can use. I personally use a Cobbler Shaker which is a household favourite. Some say for novices but frankly when you have an all in one solution which is made of stainless steel, it’s my go to cocktail shaker. It has a built in strainer and a cap which can be used as a jigger (the cap is a standard 1oz/30ml size). The two other cocktail shakers to consider are Boston and French/Parisian, each with their individual pros and cons
  • Jigger - Bartending tool/dual ended cup for measuring spirits that is normally dual ended (50ml/25ml)


This is one of the simpler cocktails to construct but don’t be mislead by simplicity as this cocktail delivers on flavour. You’ll need a cocktail shaker and a jigger. Add all the measures into the cocktail shaker and shake until well chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with chocolate shavings.

Origin of Mudslide - 1970’s

Oddly enough the Mudslide is reported to have been invented on Grand Cayman Island, despite lacking a Caribbean look and feel. Legend has it that a customer wanted a White Russian but the Caribbean thatched bar didn’t have any fresh cream, so Baileys Irish Cream was used as a substitute.
